Central Chile Watershed Workshop Hosted by the Canadian Water Network Sponsored by Canadian Rivers Institute, Universidad de Concepción and EULA-Chile Environmental Sciences Centre This week-long workshop will bring together 16 Canadian students and 16 South American students to share and experience the issues related to watershed management by visiting the Biobio and Itata river basins in Central Chile. The workshop will be a hands-on, interactive program including lectures, site visits and field sampling. It will provide opportunities for direct interaction with researchers and water managers from across the watersheds. Presenters will be leaders in their fields representing a variety of sectors including academia, industry, municipal and regional governments and non-governmental organizations. Students will participate in groups prior to and during the workshop to address watershed issues. They will interact prior to the workshop via e-mail and Internet to review and prepare presentations that will be submitted two weeks prior to the workshop. Topics will include: Sewage effluents and river impacts Pulp mills and river impacts Hydroelectric and river impacts Water diversion and interbasin transfers Agricultural impacts in river basins In addition to the significant educational value of this workshop, participants will benefit from the excellent opportunity to network with other students and experts from a variety of disciplines. Participants who fulfill the pre-workshop requirements as well as the work assigned during the workshop will earn two course credits from the University of Concepción. Participants from other countries will require a passport and possibly a visa, depending on country of citizenship. Accommodation and Food Participants will travel throughout Central Chile and stay in various locations. Meals will be mostly local food and it is possible that vegetarian options will not always be available. Language The workshop will be taught primarily in English. All participants must be able to communicate verbally in English, although the expectation is not for every participant to be fully fluent. Spanish language is an asset for English speaking students. Registration Fee There will be a nominal fee of $400 CAD for Canadian students. Payment options include VISA, MasterCard or a cheque payable to the Canadian Water Network. The fee for South American students will be 48,000 CLP payable in cash to EULA. Reimbursement for Canadian Participants Allowable Expenses: Please note that travel claim forms will be circulated at the workshop and must be returned with original receipts. University of Waterloo Finance Department will not process travel claims without original receipts. Reimbursable travel costs include airfare (economy rate) and/or ground transportation (airport transfer, bus ticket or car mileage) as well as meals during travel to and from the workshop. If participants can reasonably use ground transportation, that option should be exercised. Meals will be provided during the workshop so meals claimed during this time will not be reimbursed. Meals taken in transit to and from the workshop will be reimbursed up to a maximum of $50 per day ($12.50 for breakfast, $12.50 for lunch and $25 for dinner). Original receipts must be provided for all expenses including meals, airport transfer, flights, trains or buses (i.e. boarding cards and electronic ticket). Travel claims must be submitted within 30 days from the end of the workshop. Reimbursement for South American Participants Allowable Expenses: Please note that travel reservations will be made by the EULA-Chile Centre, University of Concepción. Upon acceptance to the workshop, students should submit the required information to HYPERLINK "mailto:gchiang@udec.cl" Gustavo Chiang so that travel to Concepcion can be booked. Reimbursable travel costs include fares for airport transfer and meals during travel to and from the workshop. If participants can reasonably use ground transportation, that option should be exercised. Meals will be provided during the workshop so meals claimed during this time will not be reimbursed. The maximum allowed reimbursement for meals taken in transit to and from the workshop will be $50 USD/day. Original receipts must be provided for all expenses including meals, flights, trains or buses (i.e. boarding cards and electronic ticket).
