Northumberland Strait Watershed Workshop

northumberland strait watershed workshop 2

This workshop provided an unparalleled opportunity for participants to tour the area’s watersheds and estuaries and to explore the region’s watershed management issues. The program included lectures, site visits and field sampling. Six main topics were explored:

  • Groundwater-fed streams
  • Stream restoration
  • Point-source estuarine stressors
  • Nonpoint-source estuarine stressors
  • Habitat changes from anthropogenic practices
  • Aquaculture

The week was co-hosted and organized by Canadian Water Network and the Canadian Rivers Institute, with instruction from Dr. Michael van den Heuvel, Canada Research Chair in Watershed Ecological Integrity and Associate Professor, UPEI; Dr. Simon Courtenay, Research Scientist, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Research Professor, UNB; and Dr. Jennifer Ings, Postdoctoral Fellow, Canadian Rivers Institute and Department of Biology, UNB.

“The new perspective I got was the importance of considering the application and consequences of the research. I am going to apply that in my work.”
