CWN has received Expressions of Qualifications from national, university-based teams to summarize the range of potential research approaches that could help inform decision-making for hydraulic fracturing and water.
Please note that this is a two-step approach. The deadline for submitting Expressions of Qualifications has passed. A full proposal will be submitted at a later date from successful applicants. Invitations to submit full proposals will be sent out by December 3, 2013. Please see the schedule below for the dates.
Five teams will ultimately be selected to conduct one-year "knowledge integration" projects, each examining one of the following major issues surrounding hydraulic fracturing activities and water:
1. Water use and demand management
2. Wastewater handling, treatment and disposal
3. Groundwater and subsurface impact issues
4. Landscape impacts of development/operations on surface water/watersheds
5. Watershed governance and management approaches for resource development, including aboriginal issues
Successful projects will directly address decision-making knowledge gaps in one of these five issue areas. Specifically, each project will integrate leading international research from across relevant disciplines to:
