Canada renews investment in water research: CWN receives $15 million

December 14, 2011, Ottawa, ON — The Canadian Water Network, the nation’s leading water management research network, was awarded by the federal government $15 million in funding over 2012–15. The announcement was made today by the Networks of Centres of Excellence Secretariat, after expert review of CWN’s progress report and strategic plan.

“CWN is creating opportunities to affirm Canada’s leadership in water research and decision-making,” said Peter Steblin, CWN’s Chair of the Board.

“We thank the NCE for its past and continued support in helping us to build a vibrant network well positioned to deliver value to Canadians.”

The independent expert review panel convened by NCE spoke highly of CWN’s progress and strategic plan.

“CWN has appropriately reoriented its research priorities to focus on user-defined needs with multi-stakeholder engagement and dialogues to define and prioritize needs,” the expert review panel noted in its report.

“CWN has established a reputation for high integrity among end users and for the high quality of its research.”

CWN will focus its efforts over the coming years on end user–led research consortia to create communities of practice that solve critical water management issues affecting Canadians.

Established in 2001 and headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, CWN was created by the Networks of Centres of Excellence Program to connect Canadian and international water researchers with decision-makers engaged in priority water management issues.
