Joint Ontario-Québec Committee on Water Management

June 5, 2015

The creation of a Joint Ontario-Québec Committee on Water Management was officially announced on May 29, 2015. The announcement was made by Glen Murray, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change of Ontario, and David Heurtel, Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and the Fight against Climate Change for Québec at the Aquahacking-Ottawa River Summit.

The Joint Committee on Water Management, comprised of 4 designated representatives from each minister, is now a permanent forum on water management policies and programs implemented by Québec and Ontario.

Canadian Water Network congratulates the collaborative partnership. "The new partnership between Ontario and Québec addresses the integral need for shared management solutions for water, particularly when water flows across provincial boundaries," says Bernadette Conant, Executive Director of Canadian Water Network.

The committee will focus on the following areas:

  • Facilitating information sharing between Ontario and Québec on water management issues
  • Finding solutions for shared drainage basins
  • Shared water management of the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River
  • Water quality in the rivière des Outaouais, lac Témiscamingue and lac Abitibi
